The School of GeoSciences

The School of GeoSciences leads the E4 and E5 DTPs. We are one of the largest and most successful interdisciplinary groupings of geographers and geoscientists in the UK, with a community of staff, students and researchers passionately committed to understanding the impact of climate on the Earth's systems, the environment and ecosystems, as well as the social, economic, cultural and political implications for society.

Through our staff and students' many achievements, we present cutting-edge research, inspirational teaching and innovative thinking, attracting some of the greatest minds from around the globe. Our work is continuously expanding our knowledge of our planet and the lives of ordinary people.

The School of Biological Sciences

We are one of the largest centres of biological science in the UK. The 2014 UK research excellence assessment placed us 3rd in the UK for our research quality, and we are ranked in the UK top 5 and world top 25 for biological sciences in both the QS and Times Higher world university rankings. We place a particularly strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, linking complementary approaches in theoretical and experimental science and working closely with physical sciences, engineering, medical and veterinary sciences.

The School of Chemistry

The School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh is one of the largest in the UK, with external research assessment metrics to match (e.g. EaStCHEM ranks second in the "Power Table" (out of 35). The School's research and facilities relevant to E4 and E5 DTP science include: environmental & atmospheric chemistry; sustainable chemistry (cleaner syntheses and chemical recovery); photovoltaic and energy-storage materials; and chemical analysis including state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and NMR.

The School of Engineering

The School of Engineering comprises more than 150 academic staff, 1,700 undergraduate students, and 450 postgraduate students.  Its research activities are directed through seven institutes: Institute for Bioengineering (IBioE); Institute for Digital Communications (IDCoM); Institute for Energy Systems (IES); Institute for Infrastructure and Environment (IIE); Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS); Institute for Materials and Processes (IMP); and Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids (IMT). Of these, the Institute of Infrastructure and Environment (IIE) carries out research contributing to efficient, sustainable and resilient infrastructure in the built and natural environments.  The School of Engineering has particular expertise relevant to the NERC DTP in eco-hydraulics, flood modelling, water and wastewater treatment, and water and sediment science.

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is a one-of-a-kind centre of excellence in clinical activity, teaching and research. 

We represent the largest concentration of animal science-related expertise in Europe, impacting local, regional, national and international communities in terms of economic growth, the provision of clinical services and the advancement of scientific knowledge.

We provide outstanding veterinary education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, using an award-winning curriculum, innovative teaching methods, and an interdisciplinary environment, for both our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Our research spans all aspects of veterinary medicine, animal biosciences, and agriculture and food security.

Edinburgh Climate Change Institute 

The centre is an inclusive hub for researchers, policy makers, businesses, students and educators. As such the ECCI community includes agencies who work to tackle climate change and experienced climate practitioners working on externally funded challenge driven projects. Our community also includes students studying climate change and those that teach them. We are therefore a collective of experts who deliver research, policy, education and training.

ECCI led projects are primarily funded through research and government grants, public and private sector support, and through expert consultancy. We seek to work with a diverse range of agents for change focussed on climate solutions.

We are an interdisciplinary hub within the University of Edinburgh driving evidence based climate action across Scotland, the UK and beyond.

EPCC, part of the University of Edinburgh, is the UK's first National Supercomputing Centre, leading in High Performance Computing, AI and Data Science expertise.

Space Intelligence is a fast-growing, NatureTech company on a mission to enable zero deforestation and degradation and support mass forest restoration by producing the highest-quality nature mapping data and insights products.​

Telespazio UK, based in Luton, is part of Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo (67%) and Thales (33%) and is headquartered in Rome.​ It is one of the major players worldwide in satellite solutions and services, and has a wide international network of space centres and teleports.​

Telespazio is at the forefront in many sectors. From the design and development of space systems to the management of launch services and satellites in-orbit control, from Earth observation services to communications, from navigation and satellite tracking to scientific programmes.​ It is involved in the majority of European Space Agency programmes, including space exploration, Earth observation, satellite navigation, launchers and human space flight.​

In recent years, Telespazio UK has built a European space industry leadership position in the provision of satellite observations for the climate change marketplace. Several key initiatives give Telespazio UK major involvement in the provision and use of satellite observations to help stakeholders monitor, mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland

BioSS specialises in the development and application of the quantitative methods needed to enhance scientific knowledge and impact. We are recognised internationally for our work at the interface between the mathematically-based sciences and a wide span of applied sciences covering agriculture and the rural economy, the environment, food and health.

We are one of the Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutes (SEFARI), working collectively to deliver a portfolio of strategic research and translational activities commissioned by RESAS.

Dynamic Earth

As the UK’s only science centre dedicated to Earth and environmental sciences, our mission is to empower everyone with understanding and empathy for the Earth. There are four main strands to our work:

FAMILY AND PUBLIC PROGRAMME: We bring Earth and environmental science to life for 250,000 people each year.

SCHOOLS PROGRAMME: Providing science learning to 30,000 pupils in person each year, and a further 15,000 online.

COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME: Working with community partners to provide free, inclusive community-led science and learning engagement to 3,000 people per year.
